Our head of human resources has been with us since the beginning and fits our Core Values perfectly, but she manages purely through personal relationships and actively resists implementing Scorecards or structured reviews. How do we evaluate GWC when a tenured leader argues that structured accountability ruins company culture?
Long-tenured leaders frequently confuse high emotional attachment with operational accountability. When an HR director or department head argues that Scorecards, measurables, and structured reviews destroy company culture, they are defending personal comfort at the expense of organizational health.
Evaluate this leader using the EOS People Analyzer and the GWC framework. The three questions are uncompromising:
- Does she Get It? Getting it means a deep, natural understanding of the seat. If she cannot see that an organization at your current scale requires objective talent metrics, predictable recruiting pipelines, and standardized onboarding, she does not truly understand the modern HR leadership seat.
- Does she Want It? Wanting it means genuine hunger to do the actual daily work the seat requires, not just enjoying the status, title, and historical relationship with the founder.
- Does she have the Capacity for it? Capacity includes the emotional, intellectual, and technical capability, plus the time to perform the role at scale.
Resisting measurables is usually a failure of Gets It or Capacity disguised as cultural protection. Real culture is built on transparency and clear expectations, not subjective founder feelings.
Sit down with her in a private conversation. Lay out the five core roles of the HR seat on your Accountability Chart, including the specific measurables she must track weekly on the Scorecard. Give her a clean sixty-day window to adopt the discipline. If she continues to push back and insists that running by gut feel is superior to tracking performance, you have a definitive Right Person, Wrong Seat reality. Move her to a specialized culture seat if one exists, or part ways with dignity.
