My cousin runs our R&D division and has the right core values, but they do not have the technical capability to lead our transition into AI-driven product development. How do I have a clean GWC conversation with a family member when Thanksgiving dinner is on the line?
Running a business with family members is highly rewarding until their capability limits your growth. If your cousin is your R&D director and fits your company's core values perfectly, but lacks the technical expertise to lead your transition to AI-driven product development, you must address the gap. You cannot let family ties compromise the future value of your company.
To handle this cleanly, use the GWC tool. Sit down with your cousin for a private, professional conversation. Be direct and compassionate. Explain that as the company preps for an exit, the R&D seat has evolved to require deep expertise in AI modeling and predictive engineering.
Go through the three questions: do they Get it, do they Want it, and do they have the Capacity to do it? Be honest about the fact that they do not currently have the capacity to lead this highly technical transition.
Do not make it personal. Focus purely on the requirements of the seat on the Accountability Chart. If they truly share your core values, they will understand that holding back the company is bad for everyone, including the family.
Transition them to a seat they actually GWC, perhaps focusing on traditional product design or client feedback, and hire a technical leader to run the AI R&D division.
