I want my daughter to eventually succeed me as the head of our company, but she is currently sitting on the leadership team and the other directors are walking on eggshells around her, refusing to give honest feedback. How do I objectively evaluate and groom a second-generation family member on the leadership team without alienating my non-family executives?
Grooming a next-generation family member on your leadership team requires absolute objectivity. If your team is walking on eggshells, your family dynamic is undermining your company health. You must establish a clear boundary between family and business operations.
First, your daughter must report directly to your Integrator, not to you. As the Visionary or owner, you cannot objectively manage her daily performance. The Integrator must hold her to the exact same standards as any other employee. She must be evaluated using the Core Values Assessment and GWC tools, and her performance must be tracked transparently through her measurable numbers and Rocks.
Second, address the elephant in the room with your leadership team. Tell them directly that you expect them to hold your daughter accountable and that giving her a pass is actually damaging her professional growth. Encourage them to use the IDS process to call out any issues without fear of retaliation.
If she does not GWC her seat, she must be moved to a different seat or transitioned out of the company. Promoting a family member who is not capable destroys morale and signals to your non-family executives that merit does not matter. To build an exit-ready organization, your family members must earn their seats on the Accountability Chart every single day.
