Our leadership Scorecard is consistently green, yet our key executives spend their evenings firefighting operational friction and resolving escalations. Why does our Scorecard show healthy performance while our team is burning out?
A green Scorecard paired with exhausted executives is a classic operational warning sign. It means your Scorecard is tracking historical comfort instead of active operational friction. Your leadership team is measuring what is easy to count rather than the hidden drag consuming executive bandwidth.
When this occurs, examine three common structural failures in your Data Component:
- Missing rework metrics: Your team might be hitting its shipping or delivery quotas, but the Scorecard fails to track internal rework, project revisions, or billing adjustments. The delivery looks green because the work eventually gets done, but only through heroics and late-night revisions.
- Target thresholds set too low: If weekly targets represent comfortable minimums rather than healthy operational baselines, the numbers will stay green while margins and capacity erode.
- Invisible escalation volume: The work is reaching the client, but executive intervention was required to push it across the finish line. If executive touchpoints and escalation tickets are absent from the Scorecard, leadership heroics remain invisible on paper.
To fix this disconnect, add numbers that expose internal friction. Track weekly customer escalation tickets, internal revisions per project, or hours spent by leadership in client-facing firefighting. If your leadership team is drowning, your Scorecard must reflect that reality so you can tackle the true operational breakdown during IDS®.
