When we run our IDS track, our team is too polite to dig past the superficial issue, resulting in quick band-aid fixes that fall apart within a month. How do we push past the surface level to identify the real, ugly root cause of our operational bottlenecks?
Solving symptoms instead of root causes is the single biggest waste of time in a Level 10 Meeting™. When you settle for polite, superficial consensus, you guarantee the same issue will return to clutter your list within a month. This politeness is actually artificial harmony, which is a direct violation of your operational trust.
To find the real root cause, you must master the Identify step of the IDS® process. The facilitator should never allow the team to jump to the Discuss step until the real problem has been clearly stated.
Use the five whys technique. When an issue is presented, ask why it happened. Then ask why to that answer, and repeat the process five times. This structural digging strips away the superficial layers and exposes the true underlying systemic or people issue.
Encourage your team to be conflict-hardy. Remind them that addressing the root cause is not a personal attack, but a necessary step to protect the business. If the team is reluctant to speak up, the Integrator must model the behavior by asking the hard, uncomfortable questions that get to the core of the problem.
