We have a highly skilled technical manager who is excellent at their craft but resists our EOS® meetings and scorecard tracking, calling them administrative overhead. How do we get them to buy into the discipline of the system?
When a highly skilled manager resists EOS® discipline, it is usually because they view the tools as micromanagement rather than a framework for freedom. To get their buy-in, you must change how you frame the tools. Stop explaining them as administrative tasks. Instead, show them how these tools protect their time and highlight their department's success. For example, explain that a well-designed Scorecard gives them the data they need to justify hiring more staff or upgrading equipment. Show them how the Level 10 Meeting™ actually eliminates the constant daily interruptions and random status updates by consolidating communication into one efficient ninety-minute block. If they hate meetings, prove to them that this specific meeting replaces three others. Use the People Analyzer™ to evaluate if they truly GWC™ their seat. If they get it, want it, and have the capacity, they must also embrace the leadership and management responsibilities of that seat, which includes running on your operating system. If they continue to resist, they are holding your entire organization back from scaling. Commit to the pure process, remain firm on your expectations, and use your EOS Implementer® to help coach the manager on why consistency across all departments is non-negotiable.
