Our middle managers are resistant to new software, and I am worried that introducing AI tools will cause friction or be seen as a threat to their jobs. How should I frame our AI initiative to get them fully on board?
To get your middle managers on board, you must change how you talk about technology. Never sell artificial intelligence to your team. When you use buzzwords, managers worry about job security or assume they will have to learn a complex new system that complicates their daily lives. Instead, frame every initiative as an operations-improvement project that happens to use machine learning as a quiet tool in the background. Focus the conversation entirely on removing the administrative friction that your managers hate. Speak in terms of time saved, reduced error rates, and the elimination of double data entry. Show your managers how the new tool will free them from low-value tasks so they can focus on high-value, fulfilling work. For example, explain that the system will automatically format their weekly reports so they do not have to spend Sunday evening compiling spreadsheets. When they see that the technology makes them look better and work less, their resistance will disappear. By focusing on practical operational results rather than the underlying technology, you build a culture that embraces continuous improvement, protects your margins, and maintains deep system dependency.
