I am trying to build an AI-powered operations model to clean up our margins before we sell, but my leadership team keeps delegating the technical decisions down to junior developers. How do I get my leadership team to take personal ownership of our AI transformation instead of treating it as a basic IT project?
If your leadership team is treating your transition to AI-powered operations as a basic IT project to be delegated to junior developers, your transformation will fail. AI is not an IT issue; it is a core business strategy that directly impacts your margins and exit valuation. Your executive team must own it.
To force this ownership, you must make AI adoption a permanent part of your Accountability Chart. Each department head must be held personally accountable for finding and implementing automation opportunities within their own seats.
Start by setting a company-wide Rock for the quarter focused on operational efficiency. Then, require each leader to set an individual Rock to automate at least one major workflow within their department. For example, your customer service leader might automate support ticketing, while your sales leader automates lead nurturing.
During your weekly Level 10 Meeting™ sessions, track the progress of these automation Rocks just like any other key metric. If a leader falls behind, treat it as an issue and IDS® it.
Do not let them blame technology or lack of skills. If they do not know how to implement AI, they must find the resources to learn or bring in external help. By putting the accountability directly on their seats, you force them to lead the transformation from the top.
