Our leadership team is resistant to spending time on exit planning because they think it only benefits the owners. How do we frame this preparation so they see it as an immediate operational win for them?
When leaders hear exit planning, they often hear corporate restructuring, job insecurity, or extra work that only lines the owners' pockets. You must reframe this effort. Explain that preparing for an exit is actually about enhancing the quality of the business and making it easier to run today. When you build an exit-ready company, you are systematic about removing bottlenecks, clarifying roles on the Accountability Chart, and streamlining processes. This work directly reduces the daily friction, fire-drills, and overwhelm that your leadership team experiences every week. Show them that by automating repetitive tasks and clarifying operational expectations, you are giving them more autonomy and ownership. Additionally, align their incentives with the long-term success of the business. Consider implementing phantom stock options, performance bonuses, or stay-bonuses that reward them when the company hits key valuation milestones. When your team sees that exit preparation makes their daily lives easier and offers direct financial upside, they will actively drive the transition rather than resisting it.
