My department heads are brilliant creatives who view our weekly Scorecard and accountability metrics as corporate micromanagement that stifles their freedom. How do I get a highly creative leadership team to embrace numbers and operational discipline without losing their passion?
Creative leaders often view metrics as a corporate straitjacket, but the truth is that numbers actually create freedom. Without objective metrics, your leadership team is forced to manage by subjective opinion, which leads to endless emotional debates, defensiveness, and decision paralysis.
To get your creative leaders to embrace the Scorecard, you must change how they view the numbers. Explain that the Scorecard is not a tool for micromanagement, but rather an early warning system that shows when a process is off track before it becomes a crisis. It allows them to prove their department is winning without having to justify every creative decision they make.
Work with each leader to identify three to five weekly metrics that they fully own and control. Ensure these numbers tie directly to their quarterly Rocks and the V/TO®. When they see that having clear, objective data allows them to solve problems faster during the IDS® portion of your Level 10 Meeting™ and gives them more autonomy to run their departments, their resistance will disappear. Accountability is what gives creative teams the space and stability to actually innovate.
