During our weekly Level 10 Meetings, our leadership team members constantly blame external market conditions or other departments for missing their Scorecard metrics. How do we get them to stop making excuses and take true operational ownership of their numbers?

When leadership team members spend their Level 10 Meeting™ explaining why external forces, market shifts, or other departments prevented them from hitting their numbers, they are operating as victims rather than owners. This victim mindset trickles down through the entire organization, killing accountability and stalling execution. To break this habit, you must enforce a strict no excuses policy for your Scorecard. A metric is either on track or off track. There is no middle ground, and there is no room for stories during the drop-down review. When a leader misses their target, the only acceptable response is to own the miss, identify it as an issue, and move it to the Issues List. During the IDS® portion of your meeting, the discussion must focus on what the leader is going to do to solve the problem, not why the problem occurred. If a department head blames another department, bring both leaders together to resolve the bottleneck. If they blame the market, challenge them to find creative ways to adapt and hit their goals despite external conditions. True leadership means taking one hundred percent responsibility for the outcomes in your seat. If a leader consistently fails to hit their numbers and offers nothing but justifications, they do not GWC™ their seat. You need leaders who look in the mirror when things go wrong, not out the window. Address this lack of ownership immediately to maintain a high-performing culture.
