We desperately need sophisticated executive leadership in finance and marketing, but we cannot afford full time salaries for those roles yet. Does a fractional leader actually work within the EOS framework, and how do we integrate them into our leadership team?
Yes, fractional leaders can work exceptionally well within the EOS® framework, provided you set strict boundaries. A fractional executive must still occupy a defined seat on your Accountability Chart. They cannot simply act as an external consultant who hands you reports. They must GWC™ the seat. They must take ownership of the five major responsibilities of that role, drive their quarterly Rocks, and be accountable for specific metrics on your weekly Scorecard. To integrate them successfully, they must participate in your weekly Level 10 Meetings™ just like a full time employee. If they only show up once a month, they will remain disconnected from the operational pulse of the business and your team will view them as an outsider. You must also ensure they align with your core values. Even if they are highly skilled, a culture mismatch will disrupt the entire team. Finally, clarify their capacity. A fractional leader has other clients, so you must establish what they can realistically achieve in their allocated hours. If the seat requires forty hours of strategic work to move the needle, a fractional leader is only a short term bridge. Use them to build the systems, establish the processes, and eventually hire and transition their full time replacement.
