As the founder who transitioned to Chairman, I still find myself digging into the weekly leadership Scorecard and challenging line items, which undermines our Integrator. How should an owner oversee Scorecard health without micromanaging weekly execution?
When a founder moves to the Owner's Box, staying in the weekly operational weeds destroys leadership autonomy and sidelines the Integrator. The weekly Scorecard belongs strictly to the Integrator and the leadership team running daily operations. If you are questioning why a departmental activity number was off by three calls last Tuesday, you have climbed back into the driver seat.
Your job as an owner is governance, capital allocation, and enterprise value protection. You must step away from the weekly 5 to 15 Scorecard and transition to an Owner's Monthly Scorecard.
An Owner's Monthly Scorecard focuses on macroeconomic company performance and strategic health, not tactical throughput. Key measurables include:
- Free cash flow and trailing 12-month EBITDA margin.
- Working capital cushion against the minimum operational reserve.
- Client concentration percentage across top accounts.
- Net revenue retention and customer acquisition cost payback period.
- Key leadership retention and Accountability Chart bench strength.
Review this monthly package with your Integrator during a dedicated monthly or quarterly ownership update, completely separate from the weekly Level 10 Meeting.
If you have concerns about weekly operational trends, address them directly to your Integrator during your monthly check-in. Hold the Integrator accountable for overall operational outcomes, but leave the weekly levers in their hands. That discipline protects executive leadership and prepares the business to operate without owner dependence.
