Our leadership team meetings are incredibly polite, but we rarely have any real, passionate debate because everyone is afraid of hurting feelings or breaking harmony. How do we foster healthy, vulnerable conflict so we can solve our biggest business issues?

Artificial harmony is a major roadblock to scaling. When a leadership team is too polite, issues go unresolved, frustrations fester, and execution suffers. To build a healthy, cohesive, and functional leadership team, you must start with vulnerability-based trust.

Begin by sharing your own vulnerabilities as the business owner or leader. Admit your mistakes, share what you are struggling with, and ask for help. This sets the tone and gives others permission to do the same.

During your next Level 10 Meeting™, actively mine for conflict. If you notice someone quiet during a discussion, or if you see subtle body language suggesting disagreement, call it out. Ask them to share their perspective. Reassure the team that conflict over ideas is healthy and necessary for the business to grow.

You can also use a conflict norm. Agree as a team on how you will disagree. Remind everyone that challenging an idea is not a personal attack on the person who proposed it.

When the team experiences a productive, passionate debate and reaches a solid decision, pause and point it out. Validate that the conflict was necessary and healthy. Over time, your team will realize that healthy conflict actually builds trust and accelerates results, making the business far more robust and prepared for a clean exit.
