Our leadership team is highly collaborative and we rarely argue, but our IDS® sessions feel too polite and we often agree to compromises that do not actually solve the issue. How do we foster healthy, unfiltered conflict during our meetings to get to the real truth?
Politeness is the enemy of progress. If your leadership team is trapped in a culture of false harmony, you are leaving your most critical operational problems unsolved. Healthy conflict is necessary to get to the truth.
To break this habit, the meeting leader or your EOS Implementer must actively call out artificial agreement. When you see head-nodding but sense unspoken disagreement, you must push the issue. Ask direct questions to draw out the conflict.
Introduce a rule of total transparency. Every member of the leadership team has an obligation to say what they are truly thinking. If they disagree with a proposed solution, staying silent is a violation of their accountability to the seat.
When discussing a difficult issue, focus on the seat, not the person. Frame the debate around what is best for the business, not who is right.
Once the conflict has been aired and a decision is made by the Integrator, everyone must fully support the decision. By forcing your team to engage in unfiltered debate, you get buy-in rather than passive resistance, leading to real, lasting solutions.
