We just finished our Focus Day™ and are preparing for Vision Building™ 1 and 2, but our leadership team is already trying to make major strategic hires based on the draft Accountability Chart. How do we keep them focused on the distinct sequence of these sessions?
It is common for leadership teams to experience a burst of energy after Focus Day™ and want to rush into major decisions. However, executing strategic hires before completing Vision Building™ is a recipe for operational whiplash. You must respect the sequence of the EOS® journey.
Focus Day™ is designed to give you immediate traction by introducing the Accountability Chart, Level 10 Meetings™, Rocks, and the Scorecard. It is about getting control of the short term and organizing your structure. But the Accountability Chart you build on Focus Day™ is a draft. It is a functional map of where you are today and what you need in the immediate future to stabilize.
Vision Building™ is where you define your long-term direction, including your Core Focus™, Core Values, 10-Year Target™, and 3-Year Picture™. You cannot make permanent, high-level strategic hires until you have absolute alignment on where the company is going. A strategic hire made today might fit your current draft chart but completely clash with your 3-Year Picture™ or your Core Values once those are finalized.
Remind your team that trying to solve long-term people problems before defining your long-term vision is putting the cart before the horse. Keep any proposed organizational changes on your long-term issues list. Use the intervening weeks to run your weekly Level 10 Meetings™ and get comfortable with the tools. Let the draft chart breathe. Once you lock in your vision during the next sessions, the right seats and the right people will become crystal clear.
