We want to optimize our implementation schedule and are debating whether to combine Focus Day and our first Vision Building session into a single two-day retreat. Why is this compressed approach a mistake, and how does the separation of these sessions protect the quality of our rollout?
Combining these sessions is a fundamental mistake that will dilute the impact of both. Focus Day™ is designed to help your team master the basic operational tools, specifically the Accountability Chart™, the Scorecard, Rocks, and the weekly Level 10 Meeting™. These are traction tools. They are designed to bring immediate order, focus, and accountability to your day-to-day operations.
Your team needs at least thirty days, and ideally closer to forty-five days, of executing with these operational tools to build the capacity for strategic thinking. If you try to build your vision before you have established baseline accountability, you are building on sand. Your leadership team will be too distracted by daily operational fires to think clearly about the long-term future of the business.
By keeping these sessions separate, you allow the team to experience the friction of using the Scorecard and running weekly meetings. This real-world practice exposes structural issues and personnel gaps that you must address before you can honestly answer the strategic questions on the V/TO®. Vision Building™ requires a different mental posture. It requires you to lift your head up and look at the horizon. You cannot do that effectively if you are still struggling to define who is accountable for what. Respect the cadence of the system and give your team the time to build their traction muscles first.
