We are starting our EOS® journey and are confused about the shift in focus between our very first session and the strategic work that follows. What is the fundamental difference between Focus Day™ and Vision Building™, and why must we master the operational tools before we even touch our long-term strategy?
Focus Day is entirely about getting immediate control of your business. It is operational, tactical, and designed to stop the bleeding. In this first session, you build your Accountability Chart, define your first set of quarterly Rocks, establish your weekly Meeting Pulse, and build your weekly Scorecard. These are the execution tools. You do not talk about your ten year target or your marketing strategy on Focus Day. You simply focus on getting traction on a weekly basis.
Vision Building, which takes place over the next two sessions, is where you actually define the strategy. This is where you answer the eight questions on the V/TO. You define your Core Values, Core Focus, 10-Year Target, Marketing Strategy, 3-Year Picture, 1-Year Plan, quarterly Rocks, and Issues List.
Trying to do Vision Building before you master Focus Day is a recipe for failure. If you do not have the operational discipline to execute weekly, your vision is nothing more than a hallucination. By mastering the Focus Day tools first, your leadership team builds the execution muscles required to actually achieve the long-term goals you set during Vision Building. When you finally sit down to map out your strategic vision, you do so with the confidence that your team has the capability to execute it. Focus Day is about execution, while Vision Building is about alignment and direction. Both are essential, but they must happen in that exact order to make the system stick.
