After establishing our execution tools on Focus Day™, we are moving into Vision Building™ but our team keeps trying to solve near-term operational problems instead of thinking strategically. How do we mentally pivot the leadership team from the short-term focus of Focus Day™ to the long-term horizons of Vision Building™?

Focus Day™ is all about bringing immediate control to the operational chaos of your business. It introduces the tools that manage the weekly and quarterly execution, which naturally keeps the team focused on immediate, tangible problems. Moving into Vision Building™ Day 1 and Day 2 requires a major shift in perspective. You are transitioning from working on the ground to looking at the horizon. To help your team make this mental transition, you must establish clear boundaries between tactical execution and strategic planning. Use these steps to guide your sessions:
- Protect the space. Remind the team at the start of the day that all current operational issues belong on the weekly Level 10 Meeting™ agenda, not in the Vision Building™ session.
- Use the Issues List as a parking lot. When a short-term operational problem inevitably comes up, immediately write it down on your Issues List and defer it. This assures the team the problem will not be forgotten, freeing their minds to focus on the long-term strategic vision.
- Ground the discussion in the V/TO®. Use this document to force the team to think in terms of three-year, five-year, and ten-year targets before discussing today's challenges.
Making this transition successfully is why working with a professional EOS Implementer is highly recommended. An experienced facilitator knows how to guide the room, using structured exercises to lift the team out of the daily weeds and up to a strategic altitude. Attempting this transition without an external guide often results in a glorified operational meeting rather than a true vision alignment.
