Our leadership team uses the five-minute Level 10 Meeting™ Segue to air passive-aggressive grievances disguised as "professional updates," which instantly poisons the room before we even look at the Scorecard. How do we clean up the Segue and stop this toxic emotional venting?
The Segue is designed to transition your minds from the daily operational grind into a focused, collaborative state. It is a tool to build healthy team dynamics and vulnerability, not a platform for passive-aggressive airing of grievances. When leaders use this time to take veiled swipes at peers, they break the trust that holds your leadership team together.
As the Integrator or meeting facilitator, you must shut this behavior down immediately. The rule for the Segue is absolute: one personal good news item and one professional good news item. If a leader starts their professional update with a complaint, a critique, or a passive-aggressive comment about another department, the facilitator must interrupt them on the spot. Remind them of the ground rules. Let them know that grievances belong on the Issues List, not in the Segue.
Force them to restate a genuine piece of positive news or pass their turn. If they cannot find any good news, move to the next person. Do not let the negative energy linger or invite debate. This discipline protects the emotional safety of the room and reinforces your company's Core Values. To prevent this behavior from resurfacing, address the passive-aggressive behavior directly with the individual in a separate one-on-one meeting. Remind them of their commitment to the leadership Charter and the expectation to solve issues openly and honestly, rather than hiding behind snide remarks during the weekly transition.
