Our team has become completely numb to seeing red on our weekly Scorecard. They look at a missed target, shrug, and move on to the next agenda item. How do we rebuild a culture of high accountability where missing a number triggers immediate action?
When a team becomes numb to red numbers on the Scorecard, your accountability system has broken down. If a missed target is met with a shrug, your metrics have lost their meaning and your Level 10 Meeting™ is losing its effectiveness.
This numbness usually happens because targets are unrealistic, or there are no consequences for missing them. To break this cycle, you must first review your targets and ensure they are realistic yet challenging. If a target is structurally impossible to hit due to current market conditions, it must be adjusted.
Once you have validated the targets, enforce the discipline of dropping every single red metric to the Issues list during the Scorecard review. Use IDS® to uncover the root cause. If a leader consistently misses their target for multiple weeks, you must address the conative or cognitive fit of the seat owner.
Are they struggling with Follow Thru, or do they lack the capacity to hit the number? If the seat owner cannot consistently hit their targets, you must make a hard decision about their fit on the Accountability Chart using GWC™. When the team sees that missed numbers lead to serious, objective problem-solving and real consequences, the discipline of the green scorecard will be restored.
