We have an operational department where the weekly scorecard metrics are always green, but the department still feels chaotic and disorganized. How do we diagnose and fix this misalignment?
When a department feels chaotic despite having entirely green scorecard metrics, you are measuring the wrong things. Your scorecard is giving you a false sense of security because the metrics you selected are not actually aligned with operational health.
To diagnose this issue, you must go back to the drawing board using the Great Day or Lousy Day exercise. Ask your department leader to list everything that occurs on a truly great day and a truly lousy day in their department. Compare this list to your current scorecard metrics. You will likely find that your current metrics track easy, low-impact tasks rather than the critical activities that prevent chaos.
For instance, your team might be tracking completed admin tasks, which are easy to keep green, while ignoring backlogs, scheduling delays, or communication lag.
To fix this, replace your current metrics with indicators that directly measure your operational bottlenecks. If inventory management is chaotic, track weekly stock discrepancies or late vendor shipments.
Your weekly scorecard must act as an accurate reflection of reality. If the department feels out of control, the scorecard must reflect that with red numbers. Redefine the metrics until your scorecard matches the actual pulse of your operations.
