Our transition segue has become a therapy-like check-in where members share their current stress levels and emotional exhaustion in detail, which drains the room of momentum before we even look at our numbers. How do we reset the segue to serve its actual operational purpose without sounding uncaring?
The five-minute transition segue is designed to help busy leaders slow down, clear their minds, and transition from working in the business to working on the business. It is a critical operational buffer, but it must never become an unstructured group therapy session or an emotional dumping ground.
When team members use this time to share long, exhausting stories about their stress levels or burnout, they drain the room of its execution focus. To stop this, the facilitator must strictly enforce the boundaries of the transition segue.
Instruct your team that their update must consist of one personal best and one professional best from the past week, delivered in sixty seconds or less per person. Keep the tone upbeat, rapid, and focused on progress.
If a leader shares that they are experiencing a massive personal or professional crisis during the segue, thank them for their honesty, write down the issue, and immediately drop it to the Issues List for later in the meeting. Do not allow the team to discuss, console, or problem-solve during the transition. Move directly into the scorecard review to maintain the meeting pulse and protect your collective energy.
