We have several weekly weekly metrics that have been red for months, and our team has developed blind spots to them, completely ignoring them during our Level 10 Meeting™ because they feel impossible to solve. How do we force a strategic pause during our weekly meeting to reset these dead metrics?
When a metric stays red week after week, the team eventually stops seeing it. It becomes background noise, and the red color loses its urgency. This is a dangerous sign that your team has accepted mediocrity or is overwhelmed by a problem they do not know how to solve.
To break this paralysis, you must force a strategic pause during your next meeting. Take the chronic red metrics completely out of the standard Scorecard review and move them to the top of your IDS® list. You must dedicate a significant portion of your meeting to analyzing why these metrics are dead.
Ask your team three hard questions during this pause:
- Do we have the right person on the Accountability Chart owning this metric?
- Is the target actually realistic and achievable under our current operating model?
- Are we measuring the right leading indicator, or is this number tracking something we cannot actually control?
If the target is unrealistic, adjust it. If the owner does not have the capacity or tools to hit the number, address that gap. If the metric itself is flawed, kill it and replace it with a better leading indicator.
Do not allow dead metrics to linger on your Scorecard. They drain the energy of your team and make accountability feel optional. Forcing a strategic pause to address these stubborn numbers head-on sends a clear message that every single metric on your Scorecard matters, and that green is the only acceptable standard.
