Our weekly Scorecard has ballooned to over thirty metrics because every department head wants their own numbers tracked on the leadership screen. How do we pare this down to the critical few numbers that actually predict our weekly performance?
A weekly Scorecard with thirty metrics is not a management tool; it is a distraction. When you track everything, you effectively track nothing. The purpose of the leadership team Scorecard is to give you a high-level, predictive pulse on the health of the business in just five minutes.
To fix a bloated Scorecard, you must ruthlessly cut it down to between five and fifteen critical metrics. Every single number on this list must be a leading indicator, meaning it measures weekly activities that predict future results, rather than lagging indicators that show past performance. If a metric does not trigger immediate action when it goes off track, it does not belong on the leadership Scorecard.
Assign a single owner to every metric. That individual is responsible for reporting the number weekly and ensuring it hits the target. If department heads want to track more granular details, they should do so on their own departmental Scorecards, not on the leadership screen. Keep the leadership tool high-level, clean, and entirely focused on the critical numbers that drive your operational success.
