I am ready to make our first real external leadership hire to run operations so I can focus on big-picture strategy, but I am terrified of bringing in a high-priced executive who destroys our culture or fails to execute. How do I use the Accountability Chart and Kolbe to get this hire right?
Bringing in your first external leadership hire to run daily operations is a major milestone, but doing it blindly is a recipe for disaster. To get this hire right, you must decouple the hiring process from personal chemistry and anchor it in your Accountability Chart and conative needs.
First, clearly define the seat. Do not look for a generic savior. Use the Accountability Chart to build the exact roles and responsibilities for this seat. Ensure the candidate completely gets it, wants it, and has the capacity to do it. This is the GWC™ framework in action. If they do not hit all three, do not hire them, regardless of their resume.
Second, look at the conative profile of your current team, specifically yours as the Visionary. If you are a high Quick Start who loves starting new initiatives but struggles with follow through, hiring another high Quick Start will create chaos. You need an Integrator who has a high Follow Thru score on the Kolbe A™ Index. This person will instinctively design systems, build processes, and bring order to your ideas.
Before making an offer, administer the Kolbe A™ Index to the final candidates. Look for someone whose natural method of operation complements your weaknesses. Introduce them to your existing leadership team in an informal setting to observe how they build personal connection and handle status management. By defining the seat first and testing for conation second, you eliminate the guesswork and protect your culture.
