I am making my first outside hire for a true leadership team seat, and I am terrified that bringing in an expensive corporate executive will break our culture or disrupt our current execution. How do we ensure this first critical hire is a success?
When you bring in your first external executive to sit on your leadership team, the biggest mistake is hiring for a resume rather than cultural alignment and execution capability. To protect your company culture and ensure this hire is a success, you must use your core values and the GWC™ framework as your ultimate filter. Do not get blinded by a big corporate pedigree.
Start by matching the candidate against your Accountability Chart. The seat must be clearly defined with five major roles before you even write a job description. The candidate must Get It, Want It, and have the Capacity to Do It. If they do not pass this screen, do not hire them, no matter how impressive their background.
Once they are hired, do not let them drift. Integrate them immediately into your weekly Level 10 Meeting™. This forces them to adapt to your operating rhythm and keeps their focus on your quarterly Rocks. Have them spend their first thirty days learning the business rather than trying to overhaul it. They should shadow your team, talk to customers, and absorb your processes. This builds the peer trust required to make them an effective leader on your team.
