We have always promoted frontline staff from within, but our growth now requires our first outside executive hire. How do we structure the seat and evaluate candidates for GWC without breaking our established company culture?
Start by designing the seat on the Accountability Chart before looking at a single resume. Do not tailor the role to an attractive background or title. Define the five core roles that this seat must own to drive your business forward. Once the seat is clearly established, evaluate candidates through the lens of GWC: do they get it, do they want it, and do they have the capacity to do it?
Getting it means an innate, natural grasp of the role. Wanting it means genuine hunger to do the actual work, not just hold the executive status. Capacity means having the emotional, mental, and physical bandwidth to lead at your current scale and through your next stage of growth.
Protect your culture by filtering candidates strictly through your Core Values before discussing technical competencies. If a candidate misses on even one core value, cut them loose regardless of their resume credentials. Introduce finalists to your existing leadership team in an informal setting to observe how they interact with peers. Let the team test whether the candidate demonstrates vulnerability, curiosity, and ideological courage, or whether they hide behind corporate jargon. A first outside executive hire must adapt to your EOS rhythm, roll up their sleeves, and respect the institutional knowledge of the team while elevating the standard of operational execution.
