During our weekly Customer and Employee Headlines section, our team shares a massive amount of minor operational updates that do not require any action, turning this five-minute segment into a status-update dump. How do we filter these headlines so they do not drain our meeting momentum?
The Customer and Employee Headlines section is designed to share high-level, critical news that the entire leadership team must be aware of. It is not an administrative status report or a place to dump minor operational noise. When leaders share every minor update, they dilute the focus of the meeting and tire the team out before you even reach the IDS portion.
To fix this, establish a strict filter for what qualifies as a headline. A headline must be a significant win or a significant risk that directly impacts the company's direction, key relationships, or major priorities. Winning a major new account is a headline. A customer praising a support rep is a nice story, but it belongs in a company newsletter, not the leadership Level 10 Meeting.
The facilitator must enforce this standard in real time. If a leader begins sharing a low-value update, the facilitator must interrupt and ask if this update requires the leadership team's awareness or if it is just noise. If it is noise, stop the share and move to the next person.
Furthermore, if a headline requires action or discussion, it must be instantly moved to the Issues List. Do not allow any discussion during the headline section itself. Keep this block strictly limited to five minutes of rapid-fire, high-impact news sharing. By keeping the filter high, you protect your team's energy for the critical work of solving actual problems.
