I want to pass my business to my children, who currently hold mid-level management roles, but my leadership team does not believe they have the capability to run the company. How do I manage this tension without destroying my team's morale or my children's future?

This is one of the most difficult challenges a founder can face. If you force your children into leadership seats they have not earned, you will destroy your leadership team's morale and trigger a mass exodus of your best talent.

To manage this tension, you must separate family loyalty from business capability. Use the Accountability Chart and the GWC tool to objectively assess your children's readiness. They must Get, Want, and have the Capacity for the leadership seats they desire.

Create a clear, transparent development plan. Let your children and your leadership team know that your children will not be handed anything. They must hit their scorecard metrics, complete their Rocks, and earn the respect of their peers just like any other employee.

Let your current leadership team play a role in mentoring them. This shows your team that you value their expertise and are committed to a fair, capability-based process.

Finally, accept that your children might not be the right fit to run the operational side of the business. They can still be successful owners without sitting in the Integrator or director seats. By keeping this boundary clear, you build a healthy, cohesive, and functional leadership team while securing a stable future for both your business and your family.
