How do you facilitate tough IDS conversations when two department leaders have entrenched personal friction and refuse to agree on a root cause?
When department heads allow interpersonal friction to cloud operational issues, my job as an Implementer is to strip out the emotion and anchor the conversation in organizational health. We frame the discussion around the company's shared vision, Core Values, and the Accountability Chart, refusing to allow personal attacks or past grievances.
In the Identify step of IDS®, we force both leaders to define the problem in factual terms: what specific Scorecard metric, core process handoff, or customer deliverable is failing? If they disagree on the root cause, we inspect the boundaries between their seats. Most cross-departmental friction stems from ambiguous seat definitions or broken process handoffs, not ill intent.
We evaluate whether both individuals GWC™ their seats and whether misaligned incentives are driving the conflict. During the Discuss step, everyone speaks their mind openly, but once facts are established, we move immediately to Solve. The resolution must protect the greater company priorities rather than departmental turf. If an individual refuses to engage with open, honest vulnerability or consistently breaches Core Values, the leadership team must address whether that person belongs on the team.
