My leadership team is composed of fast-talking, highly opinionated individuals who easily hijack agendas. How do you maintain control of the room during session days without shutting down genuine healthy debate?
A room full of passionate, highly opinionated leaders is a great asset, but without strict facilitation, it easily spirals into endless, unproductive debate. My job during our session days is not to be a passive observer; it is to enforce the boundaries of the EOS® system with pigheaded discipline.
We manage this energy by using the IDS® process to handle every single issue. When your team begins to spin their wheels or repeat the same points, I will step in and call a timeout. We do not allow people to state their opinions multiple times under the guise of discussion. Once an issue is clearly identified and the relevant perspectives are shared, we move immediately to solving it.
We also enforce strict timing rules. Every segment of our agenda has a hard stop. If we are stuck on a complex strategic issue, we do not let it hijack the entire day.
We either solve it, park it, or assign a specific task to address it outside the session. By maintaining this rapid, structured pace, we channel your team's intense energy into concrete, actionable decisions rather than letting it devolve into exhausting verbal loops.
