How do you handle our quarterly sessions if our leadership team consists of family members or multi-generation business owners?

Family businesses have unique relational dynamics that often cloud basic operational decision-making. When family members sit together on a leadership team, personal history, dinner-table politics, and legacy assumptions frequently bleed into how roles and accountability are distributed. My role is to strip away the emotional fog and establish clean operational boundaries.

In our session room, there are no family privileges. We operate purely on the basis of what is best for the enterprise. When we build the Accountability Chart, we build the structure that the business needs over the next six to twelve months first, completely ignoring the names of the people currently running it. Only after the seats, roles, and accountabilities are ruthlessly clarified do we evaluate who gets what seat using the People Analyzer. Every single person, regardless of their last name or equity ownership percentage, must meet your core values and completely pass GWC: they must Get it, Want it, and have the Capacity to do the work.

If a family member does not belong in an operational seat, we address it directly. An owner can be a proud shareholder and enjoy dividend distributions without occupying an executive operational seat they are not equipped to handle. I maintain a neutral, unsentimental environment where we solve issues for the long-term health of the business rather than protecting fragile family egos. This objective framework preserves the business and protects family relationships by eliminating operational confusion.
