We are eighteen months out from a planned exit, and I want to ensure our Level 10 Meeting is actively building enterprise value. How should our leadership team adjust our IDS prioritization to focus on clean exit preparation rather than just daily firefighting?
When preparing for a clean exit, your Level 10 Meeting™ must shift from purely managing day-to-day operations to actively de-risking the business for a prospective buyer. A sophisticated buyer will look closely at your operational consistency, your dependence on the founder, and the strength of your leadership team. Your Issues List must reflect this reality.
To make this shift, you must filter and prioritize your Issues List through the lens of enterprise value. When choosing which issues to solve during IDS®, ask yourselves: does solving this problem make our business more scalable, more predictable, or less dependent on any single individual?
You must ruthlessly prioritize issues related to key-man risk, undocumented processes, and legal compliance. If a critical process exists only in your head or in the head of a single leader, that is a high-priority issue that must be solved by creating a documented system and training a backup.
Additionally, use IDS® to ensure your financial and operational data is bulletproof. Any discrepancy in your Scorecard or operational reporting must be treated as a major issue. A buyer will walk away or discount your valuation if they discover your weekly reporting is inaccurate.
By using your Level 10 Meeting™ to systematically identify and eliminate these operational risks, you show buyers a highly aligned leadership team running a predictable, self-sustaining business. This discipline directly translates to a higher valuation and a cleaner, faster exit.
