As your company scales, the demands on your leadership team will increase. To determine if your current team can handle this growth, you must evaluate them using GWC™, which stands for Get It, Want It, and Capacity to Do It, specifically focusing on the capacity element. Capacity is not just about having enough hours in the day. It encompasses mental capacity, emotional intelligence, skill set, and physical stamina. To assess this, ask yourself:
- Are they consistently hitting their targets and completing their Rocks?
- Do they possess the cognitive and conative wiring required for this seat?
- Are they capable of developing and mentoring the emerging leaders underneath them?
If a leader lacks the capacity for their growing seat, you have a hard decision to make. You can invest in their professional development, provide coaching, or restructure their role to match their actual capabilities. However, if the business is outgrowing their natural limits, you must elevate them to a different seat or bring in outside talent to fill the gap.
