We have a highly competent leadership team member who hits all their numbers but stays completely silent during IDS because they hate conflict. How do we force them to engage in healthy debate during the Level 10 Meeting?

Having a highly capable leader who remains silent during IDS® is a major liability. When a department head refuses to engage in healthy conflict, you lose their valuable perspective, and you end up with decisions that lack complete buy-in. Silence is often a passive form of disagreement, and it leads to sidebar complaints later.

To break this silence, the facilitator must actively draw them into the discussion. Do not wait for them to volunteer their opinion. During IDS®, call on them directly. Ask specific, open-ended questions like, "This decision will directly impact your department. What are the two biggest risks you see with this solution?" or "You have been quiet on this topic. Where do you disagree with the current direction?"

If they respond with a vague "I agree with whatever the team decides," do not accept it. Challenge them gently but firmly by saying, "I need your specific expertise on this. What is your seat-specific perspective?"

You must also address this pattern outside the meeting. The Integrator needs to have a one-on-one session to discuss trust and vulnerability. Remind them that keeping their opinions to themselves is actually a disservice to the company. Healthy debate is not personal conflict; it is a critical component of solving issues permanently. If they are in the seat, they are required to bring their voice to the table.
