We have a leadership team member who has great GWC™ for their seat but completely checks out mentally during the Level 10 Meeting™ unless their specific department is being discussed. How do we enforce whole-room participation during IDS®?
A leadership team is not a collection of independent department heads. It is a single, cohesive unit responsible for the health of the entire organization. When a leader checks out during IDS® because the topic is outside their department, they are failing to act as a true company leader.
To solve this, the facilitator must actively pull this person into the discussion. Do not let them sit in silence. If you are solving a marketing issue and the head of operations is quiet, ask them directly for their perspective. Say, 'From an operations standpoint, how would this solution impact your team?'
This enforces the concept of same page alignment from your Charter. Every leader must have a voice in solving company-wide issues. Their unique departmental lens is exactly what is needed to prevent unintended consequences in other parts of the business.
If the behavior persists, the Integrator must address it outside the meeting. Use a one on one session to discuss their engagement. Remind them of their seat on the Accountability Chart. As a member of the leadership team, their responsibility is to help steer the whole ship, not just paint their own cabin.
Make active participation during IDS® a metric of meeting performance. When you rate the meeting at the end of the ninety minutes, a lack of engagement from any team member should prevent the meeting from getting a ten.
