Our sales team keeps pitching prospects who fall slightly outside our V/TO Core Focus because the revenue is tempting. How do we turn the 2-Page plan into an enforceable boundary rather than an aspirational guideline?
When your sales team chases revenue outside your Core Focus, they are borrowing revenue from the future to pay for operational chaos today. A Vision/Traction Organizer is only valuable if it gives you the spine to say no to money that will break your operation.
To turn the V/TO into an operational boundary, you must tie your sales compensation and qualification criteria directly to your Target Market definitions.
Start by reviewing the three uniques and the demographic, geographic, and psychographic filters in your Marketing Strategy with your sales leader. If an incoming prospect fails even one non-negotiable filter, the rule must be absolute: sales cannot issue a proposal without explicit Integrator sign-off.
Next, audit the hidden cost of previous out-of-scope clients during your next quarterly session. Document the excess service hours, missed delivery deadlines, and margin compression that occurred because operations had to invent custom workarounds.
Show the numbers to your sales team. Revenue that falls outside your Core Focus invariably produces low margins and distracts your delivery team from serving your ideal clients.
If leadership continues to approve out-of-focus revenue, the issue is not the sales team. The issue is leadership lack of discipline. Put the Core Focus on the Issues List in your next Level 10 Meeting and decide whether you run your business by your vision or by panic.
