During the Customer/Employee Headlines section of our Level 10 Meeting™, we often get bogged down in resolving immediate customer service fires instead of just reporting the headline and dropping the issue to the list. How do we enforce the 'report only' rule for headlines?
The Customer/Employee Headlines section of the Level 10 Meeting™ is designed to keep the leadership team aware of significant news in just five minutes. However, teams often get trapped trying to solve the problems behind these headlines as soon as they are announced, turning a quick reporting section into an disorganized debate. To stop this fire-fighting behavior, you must enforce a strict reporting-only rule. When a leader shares a headline, such as a major client threatening to leave, the facilitator must immediately say, 'Drop it to the Issues List.' Do not allow any discussion, explanation, or brainstorming to happen in that moment. According to Julie Zhuo's management principles, clarity of purpose is essential for maintaining team alignment. The purpose of the headlines section is awareness, not resolution. If the headline requires action, it must wait for the IDS® portion of the meeting where it can be prioritized against all other issues. By maintaining this boundary, you protect the time allocation of your Level 10 Meeting™. It ensures that you do not waste thirty minutes on a headline while ignoring a critical, high-priority issue that is sitting lower on your list. Keep the reporting fast, drop the problems to the list, and solve them during the designated sixty minutes of IDS®.
