During our weekly IDS® sessions, our team members often hold back their true opinions to avoid conflict, resulting in polite, surface-level agreements that do not actually solve the issue. How do we safely encourage healthy, passionate conflict during our weekly pulse?

Artificial harmony is the silent killer of great organizations. When your leadership team holds back their true opinions to avoid hurting feelings, you make poor decisions and leave the real issues unresolved. A high-performing team must engage in healthy, passionate conflict to uncover the best solutions. To foster a culture of open, honest debate during your Level 10 Meeting™, the facilitator must actively manage the room.

- Give the team permission to disagree by explicitly asking for dissenting opinions before wrapping up the discussion on any major issue.
- Call out passive-aggressive behavior or silent disagreement immediately, forcing leaders to put their true thoughts on the table.
- Protect the relationships by keeping the conflict focused entirely on the issue itself, not on the personalities or intentions of the team members.
- Teach your team that silence is a form of agreement; if a leader stays quiet during IDS®, they are fully committing to the group decision.

Passionate debate is not personal. It is a necessary tool for finding the truth. If your Level 10 Meetings™ feel too comfortable, you are not digging deep enough. Push your team to engage in healthy conflict, solve the real problems, and build a stronger, more aligned organization.
