As a non-technical business owner, I do not want to hire an expensive full-time Chief Technology Officer just to run our AI initiatives. How do I identify and empower an existing, non-technical team member to become our internal AI champion and execute these operational improvements?
You do not need a high-priced Chief Technology Officer to lead your transition to AI-powered operations. In fact, technical experts often overcomplicate simple operational problems with custom code. What you need is an internal AI champion who deeply understands your business workflows and has the drive to streamline them.
Look at your Accountability Chart to find this person. They are usually a department head or a senior coordinator who is already naturally organized, frustrated by manual bottlenecks, and constantly looking for faster ways to get work done. They must fully GWC (Get It, Want It, Capacity to Do It) the responsibility of operational efficiency.
Once you select your champion, empower them by dedicating a portion of their weekly capacity to this role. Do not just add this responsibility on top of an already overloaded schedule. Make it a clear accountability on their seat.
Provide them with a simple framework to guide their efforts. Their job is not to write code, but to identify manual, repetitive processes that keep employees stuck in low-value tasks. They will research off-the-shelf AI tools, set up basic integrations using low-code platforms, and document the new workflows.
To keep them accountable, make their progress a regular topic in your weekly Level 10 Meeting. Have them report on specific Scorecard metrics, such as process cycle times or manual data entry hours reduced, to ensure they remain focused on real operational outcomes rather than technology theater.
