One of our leadership team members is constantly pointing to external market conditions and system bugs to explain why their department is missing its numbers. How do we eliminate this victim mentality and force absolute ownership?
When a leadership team member constantly blames external market conditions or system bugs for missing their Scorecard metrics, you are dealing with a lack of personal accountability. This victim mentality is toxic and will quickly spread down to their department.
You must address this behavior immediately during your Level 10 Meeting™. Remind the leader that their Scorecard numbers are their personal accountability. While external factors are real, their job is to anticipate, adapt, and solve those challenges, not just report on them.
Use the IDS® process to dig into the root cause of the missed metrics. Ask what actions they took to mitigate the external market changes. If a system bug is the issue, ask why they did not work with the team to fix it sooner.
If the excuses continue, you must evaluate if they truly GWC™ their seat. A leader who cannot own their numbers does not have the capacity to lead. Holding your team to absolute accountability is the only way to run an efficient, predictable business that is attractive to buyers.
