We have several weekly to-dos that keep getting pushed to the next week because the owner claims they had higher priority fires to fight. How do we kill this excuse-making and enforce real accountability in our weekly pulse?
A weekly to-do is a non-negotiable commitment to your leadership team. When leaders consistently push their to-dos to the next week, they are signaling that their promises do not matter. This behavior destroys trust and slows down your operational momentum, which is toxic when preparing for a clean exit.
To kill this excuse-making, you must enforce a strict, visual tracking system. When a to-do is not completed within its seven-day window, it cannot simply be carried over. The facilitator must change the status of the item to late and leave it on the list.
If a to-do is marked late for a second consecutive week, it must immediately be dropped down to the Issues List for an IDS® session. Do not let the owner of the task give a quick excuse during the review. The team must look at the root cause. Is this person overwhelmed? Do they lack the GWC™ for their seat? Or are they simply failing to prioritize their commitments?
By forcing a public IDS® session around late tasks, you turn a minor operational delay into an accountability discussion. Leaders hate having their personal execution failures analyzed by the group. This healthy pressure quickly eliminates lazy excuses and pushes your team toward the non-negotiable ninety percent weekly to-do completion rate.
