We have a few leadership team members who sit in silence during controversial IDS discussions, nod along with decisions, and then complain to their direct reports afterward. How do we eliminate this silent veto and force real, healthy conflict in our weekly Level 10 Meetings?
Silent disagreement is toxic to your leadership team trust. When leaders nod in agreement during a Level 10 Meeting™ and then trash-talk the decision to their departments, they are violating the core value of Same Page alignment. This behavior erodes team trust and signals a failure to be Humbly-Confident.
To break this cycle, the facilitator must call out the silence. If you are discussing a major operational pivot and a critical seat owner is unusually quiet, do not let them off the hook. Ask them directly for their perspective. Tell them that their silence will be interpreted as one hundred percent agreement, which means they must champion the decision afterward without reservation.
If a leader still complains outside the room, the Integrator must address it immediately in a one-on-one meeting. Use the Accountability Chart to remind them of their seat responsibilities. If they cannot disagree and commit inside the room, they do not GWC™ their seat. You need a team that is willing to engage in healthy, productive conflict during IDS® to make the business run smoothly.
