Our leadership team routinely rates our Level 10 Meetings as a nine or ten out of habit, even when we spent the entire session rambling and failed to solve our top issues. How do we eliminate this meeting rating inflation and get our leaders to give honest, constructive ratings?

Meeting rating inflation is a symptom of artificial harmony and a lack of healthy vulnerability on your leadership team. When you rate a mediocre meeting as a nine or ten, you are accepting mediocrity in your operations.

To eliminate this habit, the facilitator must change how ratings are collected and reviewed. If a team member rates the meeting an eight or lower, they must provide a brief, specific explanation of what would have made it a ten. This feedback must be constructive, such as noting that we spent too much time on background stories or failed to hold the hard stop.

To break the ice, the facilitator should lead by giving an honest, lower rating first when a meeting falls short. Giving a realistic seven or eight gives the rest of the team permission to be vulnerable and honest. Consistently striving for an authentic ten is what keeps your weekly meeting pulse sharp, accountable, and highly productive.
