My sibling holds an executive seat on our leadership team, but the other leaders walk on eggshells around them and hold back honest feedback. How do we eliminate family favoritism and establish strict operational accountability for a relative on the leadership team?
The presence of a family member on a leadership team creates an instant political minefield unless explicit, non-negotiable boundaries are set and enforced. If non-family executives believe that your sibling has a direct line to ownership or cannot be challenged without political blowback, they will withhold candor, hide problems, and disengage.
First, make it clear that inside the four walls of the business, family ties do not exist. Your sibling reports to the Integrator on the Accountability Chart, exactly like every other department head. If you are the Visionary, your sibling does not bring operational complaints to you over Sunday dinner. Any bypass of the Integrator must be shut down immediately.
Second, evaluate your sibling on the People Analyzer with complete objectivity in front of the team. If they fail to meet Core Values standards or miss GWC for their seat, they must face the exact same corrective action plan that any outside executive would face. If anything, family members must be held to a slightly higher standard of performance and cultural adherence to dispel any perception of nepotism.
Third, address the room directly during your next quarterly offsite. Acknowledge the elephant in the room. Explicitly give the rest of the leadership team permission to challenge your relative on their Scorecard metrics, overdue Rocks, and departmental performance during IDS. Make sure your sibling vocally welcomes this scrutiny. If your relative cannot accept peer-to-peer accountability without taking offense, they belong outside the company.
