As we build our Accountability Chart, our leadership team is obsessed with keeping their legacy executive titles rather than focusing on their actual GWC roles. How do we strip the ego and title-inflation out of our structural design so we can build a clean chart?
When building your Accountability Chart™, ego is your biggest obstacle. Leadership team members often fight to keep grand titles like vice president or chief officer because they equate these titles with their personal worth or status in the company.
To design a healthy organization, you must completely separate seats from titles. The Accountability Chart™ is not an organizational chart. It is a functional tool designed to show who is accountable for what.
During your sessions, establish a ground rule: we leave all titles at the door. Focus entirely on the major functions of the business, which are typically marketing and sales, operations, finance, and integration.
When defining each seat, focus solely on the five key responsibilities and whether the person GWC™'s those responsibilities. They must get it, want it, and have the capacity to do it.
If someone is struggling to let go of their title, address the underlying anxiety. Explain that clarity of accountability is what drives growth, not the name on their business card. By focusing strictly on functional seats and clear deliverables, you eliminate political posturing. This allows you to build a clean, scalable structure that supports the long-term health and valuation of the business.
