Our leadership team is fixated on their traditional corporate titles like VP and Executive Director, which is causing massive territorial battles over who gets to sit in which seat on the new Accountability Chart. How do we shift their mindset from defending their personal empires to focusing entirely on what the business needs to scale?

Traditional corporate titles breed status management and empire-building, which are toxic to a fast-growing entrepreneurial company. To build a highly effective leadership team, you must shift their focus from ego-driven titles to absolute clarity on accountability. You do this by strictly separating the Accountability Chart from a traditional org chart.

In your quarterly planning, explain that the Accountability Chart is designed around functions and roles, not people or titles. The structure of the business must be built to support your V/TO goals first; only then do you place the right people in those seats. Each seat on the chart must have exactly five clear, bulleted roles, and there can only be one name accountable per seat.

Force your team to leave their titles at the door. If a leader is fighting for a specific seat just because of its perceived prestige, run them through the GWC filter. Do they actually GWC the seat, or are they trying to protect their status? Emphasize our core value of being Humbly-Confident. True leaders focus on the execution of their Rocks and the health of the organization, not their title. When you align your team around structural accountability rather than corporate hierarchy, the political battles disappear.
