Several metrics on our weekly Scorecard only update monthly, meaning we look at the exact same data week after week. How do we keep these static numbers from inducing meeting hypnosis?
A weekly Scorecard is designed to be a pulse of leading indicators. If your list includes metrics that only change monthly or bi-weekly, you are looking at static data. This leads to meeting hypnosis, where team members stop paying attention because the numbers never change. It is a waste of time.
If a metric cannot be measured on a weekly basis, it does not belong on your weekly Scorecard. It is likely a lagging indicator or an annual goal that belongs in another compartment of your business.
To fix this, review your Scorecard and apply these rules:
- Remove any number that cannot be updated weekly. If you must track it, place it on a monthly dashboard or review it during your quarterly meetings.
- For metrics that seem monthly, find the weekly leading indicator that drives that result. For example, instead of tracking monthly revenue, track weekly sales appointments booked or proposals sent.
- Ensure every single number has an owner who is accountable for reporting a fresh figure every week.
By keeping your Scorecard filled exclusively with dynamic, weekly, leading indicators, you create an early warning system that allows your team to spot trends and identify issues before they become major disasters.
