We still have leadership team members showing up to our weekly Level 10 Meeting with empty boxes on the scorecard, claiming they were too busy to pull the numbers. How do we eliminate the 'I forgot' or 'no time' excuses and establish a culture of absolute data readiness?

Allowing leadership team members to show up to a Level 10 Meeting™ with missing or incomplete scorecard numbers is a direct failure of accountability. It signals to the rest of the team that the data component is optional and that personal excuses are acceptable. This behavior stalls the meeting and prevents you from identifying critical operational issues. To eliminate these excuses, you must establish a hard deadline for scorecard updates well before the meeting begins. For example, all numbers must be updated by five o'clock on the evening before your Level 10 Meeting™. This gives the team plenty of time to review the data and prepare their issues list ahead of time. If a team member consistently fails to update their numbers, do not accept the excuse that they were too busy. Being too busy to pull your scorecard metrics is like a pilot being too busy to check the fuel gauge. It is a fundamental requirement of their seat. Address this issue directly in the IDS® portion of your meeting. Ask the seat owner if they truly have the capacity to own the seat, or if they need to delegate the task of gathering the data to a direct report. Remember, the seat owner does not have to personally type the number into the spreadsheet, but they are fully responsible for ensuring it is there and accurate before the deadline. Stop tolerating empty boxes and treat data readiness as a non-negotiable standard of leadership.
